March 2022 Newsletter

A belated Happy New Year to all of you. Hope you had a nice break or at least stayed safe.

Getting Covid 19 in early January along with lots of other people has made me a bit more hesitant in providing face to face training.

Therefore, this year is going to be a continuation of tailored individualised training on Zoom or Skype.

As many selection interviews are currently conducted on Zoom, this will be a valuable way of preparing for the new world of interviews.

Over the last 2 years most of my training has been online and what has become very clear is that a number of adjustments need to be made for an online interview.  Some of the adjustments when preparing for a Zoom interview include:

  • To set up the camera so that you can look straight into the camera rather than the person. It feels strange but this is how eye contact will be made when using Zoom.

  • Make sure the lighting in the room does not reflect onto the screen.

  • Focus on building rapport with the interview panel is more difficult so it is important to use facial expressions such as smiling during the interview.

  • Speak very clearly and slightly slower to ensure you are clearly understood as there may be a slight time lag or the voice is distorted.

  • Use your voice to emphasise important points to keep the interview panel engaged. (A monotone voice will ensure the panel will be sound asleep by half way through your answer).

  • Make eye contact with the interviewer asking the question looking straight at the camera.

During the next month I am looking at the best way to conduct group training on Zoom. While I have a strong preference for face-to-face this may not be an option in the short term. I would be interested to know who would be interested to participate in small group training online.

When I have made a decision, the information will be on the website and I will email a news update.

Currently it is also difficult to make a decision re interstate travel and will be following health department advice and what is happening with the spread of Covid 19 latest version.
