Attention Doctors - Don't miss out

Tips for Specialist Interview - May 2012

It is that time of year again when interviews are held across Australia for doctors applying for medical specialties. The process is very competitive so give yourself time to prepare and practice effectively. This means matching particular examples from your work experience that clearly demonstrate that you can meet the essential requirements for the speciality you want to enter. Then you need to practice talking about how your experiences meet the requirements clearly, concisely and fully.

Whether you are applying for general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, neurology, ENT, plastics or any other specialty, the preparation approach applies to all.

Here are key tips to effective preparation.

  • Think from the interviewer's perspective - what does the interviewer need to know to select you?
  • Put yourself in the mindset of the patient - how would you feel and how would you like to be treated?
  • Clinical questions - provide a systematic description of the process.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills - give clear examples to demonstrate these.
  • Leadership skills - need to give examples.
  • Research - contributing to the knowledge of the profession.
  • Teaching experience - both on the job and in tutorials is valid.
  • Ethics and integrity - the questions have become more complex and need to be considered carefully.
  • Know your strengths and limitations - both are important.
  • Professional development - ongoing education.
  • Listen carefully to the questions and think before responding.
  • Prepare points and examples to include in your answers (even mistakes can be used as examples, adding what you learnt).

NB Consider each question carefully before answering, as quite often they are more complex then they first appear, and choose your words carefully so that what you say and what the language implies is the same.
